About Jean-Paul
Jean-Paul Carvalho is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Oxford, Fellow of New College, and Director of the Oxford University Business Economics Programme (OUBEP). He is a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society.


Prof. Carvalho is an expert on the institutional factors driving economic performance. He has made fundamental contributions to economic modeling of institutions while addressing critical policy challenges, including the political-economic risks of AI, economic integration by cultural minorities, and counter-radicalization.


Previously, he was Associate Professor at the University of California-Irvine in the Department of Economics and the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences, which he directed from 2017-2019. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard, Stanford, NYU, and Warwick.


Prof. Carvalho completed his DPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford in 2009, supported by the Commonwealth Bank Foundation.
