Tips on Interviewing via Video Conferencing
Depending on your location, some candidates will be required to interview via videoconference. The information below is designed to for these candidates.
Prior to your interview
- A test call will be arranged prior to your interview. Please note that the Foundation is conducting close to a 100 test calls and this will be a technical test only - application feedback will not be provided during your test call due to time restraints.
- Ensure the room you are using is quiet, well lit and you are against a neutral background.
- Ensure the microphone will pick up your voice clearly without significant echo. We strongly suggest you use headphones or a headset.
- Ensure you are using a stable internet connection such as using an ethernet cable over WiFi.
- Double check your interview time and relevant time zone. If you are an international applicant, this will be scheduled in the time local to the Panel's state. (e.g. VIC Panels will be AEST)
The points above are considered essential preparation for your interview. Consider finding a private office space if you do not have appropriate space ready.
If you have any questions regarding your interview for the John Monash Scholarships, please get in touch well in advance of your interview.
During your interview
- Be ready and online at least 5 minutes prior to the time of your interview. Your interview time is allotted according to the schedule and will not be extended.
- Notes and cheat sheets are not allowed during your interview: You may be required to adjust your web camera to display your desk to evidence that you do not have prepared notes to read off. Interviewers will monitor the interview to ensure that you are not accessing notes during your interview. A key aspect of our selection process is ensuring that our interviews are able to run as a discussion. Regardless of the change of format this year to video conference, we plan to run the process consistently as we would if the interviews were in person. We also suggest that you do not take time to write down the question before answering it - this can be very disruptive to the flow of the discussion and takes up time you could use for your response. You are welcome to ask your panel member to clarify the question if required.
- Our preference is that you do not utilise a virtual background. If you do opt to use one, please ensure that it does not compromise the quality of your video appearance (ensuring that you don't disappear and reappear into the virtual background).
- You will not be required to prepare a presentation for your interview. If there is material you would like to present during your interview please advise us in advance.
- Please keep in mind delays in transmission during your interview. Make sure you pause before you begin your answer to ensure the other person has finished speaking.
