Foundation Purpose
Established in 2001, the General Sir John Monash Foundation provides postgraduate scholarships to outstanding Australians to study overseas. The Foundation's mission is to encourage the academic excellence of our nation’s brightest individuals and to foster the growth of their leadership qualities for the benefit of Australia’s future.
Generously supported by governments, corporate organisations, private donors and a body of universities, the Foundation has supported 264 John Monash Scholars to date, all of whom have been selected based on their exceptional capacity for leadership and a commitment to issues of national importance. Rapidly emerging from this growing cohort are some of Australia’s most influential thought leaders and change-makers, including leading scientists, academics, business people and policymakers across sustainability, technology, the arts, engineering, health, law and Indigenous affairs.
The John Monash Scholarship for postgraduate study overseas is awarded in the spirit of General Sir John Monash, a remarkable Australian who believed that education is not given for individual benefit, but for the higher duties of citizens who seek to advance society.
In 2021, the Foundation launched the John Monash Foundation Leadership Academy, an alumni program designed to ensure the professional and academic success of Scholar members. The Academy provides ongoing support, mentorship and professional development for John Monash Scholars to help maximise their long-term impact. The alumni constitute a talent bank for Australia.
Applications for scholarships open each year in June, with Scholars appointed in October / November. Applicants can come from any discipline and study at any institution in the world.
