Jack has a Bachelor of Philosophy (Science) with 1st Class Honours from the ANU. He was a member of the Australian Conference of Undergraduate Research, and has worked with Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), and the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO), and student science and engineering organizations. He is a bassoonist with local orchestras, and a sportsman. Jack's interests are in the interface between statistical methods and the natural sciences, and with the support of the John Monash Scholarships completed a PhD at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech). His PhD research explored tomographic imaging to understand the Earth's mantle and core. Understanding of these features may provide benefits for minerals exploration, seismic activity (including the continuing goal of producing accurate advice in regards to seismic hazard reduction) and other geophysics challenges. Jack is currently a visiting researcher at the Australian National University and in March 2022 will take up a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at the Oxford University Department of Earth Sciences and a Junior Research Fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford.
