Nicholas Maurer is a PhD student at the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He combines timeless mathematical techniques with cutting-edge data science to explore the complex economic trade-offs renewable and storage technologies have with traditional energy sources such as coal, gas, and nuclear. Before heading to MIT, Nicholas was a senior researcher at the University of Queensland (Australia) and held various roles in the energy industry. He holds undergraduate degrees in physics and mechanical engineering, graduating with first-class honours and a University Medal. Nicholas believes an affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy system is achievable, and hopes his research will help guide policy and investment in that direction. In addition to the BHP John Monash Scholarship, he was also a recipient of the 2024 Quad Fellowship.
